Let me tell about $7 donuts. Most of us are familiar with special diets for our children or ourselves including gluten-free diets. One of the phenomenons of being gluten-free is that if you want to buy anything that other people eat, it’s going to cost you double.

limiting picky eater, I’ve  no idea how this is going to go.   Let me just clarify for the masses that for some of us, going gluten-free is not a weight loss fad!

One day while perusing the giant GF section at our local store I saw doughnuts. I hadn’t had a doughnut in forever and not since I went gluten-free. Why? Because gluten-free doughnuts are almost $7 for a box.  I can’t bring myself to justify that expense for something that really isn’t nutritious anyway.

This begged the question in our house “Why do they charge so much for doughnuts?”.

So I used my ASD GF cookbook that will remain nameless to make donuts. I wanted to really show my son that being GF wasn’t going to stink as bad as he though it would. I was going to make him some donuts! Dear me, what was I thinking?

I had forgotten until I was covered in dough that I did try to make these three years ago and it was NOT fun.

My sensory tactile kid actually offered to flour up his hands and try forming doughnuts. I was shocked but then again he is on a round and anything good can happen!  My son was looking at the mush on my hands that was supposed to be rolled into shapes asking “How is that going to be a doughnut?”

Yeah how indeed how will it?

We formed, raised, fried and ended up looking like Pillsbury dough people. There was rice flour every where.

After that super mess failed experiment no one asks why they sell $7 donuts anymore.

*today there are donuts pans and much better recipes for gluten-free baked goods.
